The basics
What security grants are out there?
The biggest is the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP), administered by FEMA. It provides up to $200K per site (max $600K per organization) for physical security, training, and contracted security personnel at nonprofits at high risk of terrorist or extremist attacks.
On top of that, several states run their own programs: California (CSNSGP), New York (SCAHC, includes cybersecurity), New Jersey (two streams for equipment and personnel), Illinois, Pennsylvania (hate-crime focused), Florida, Massachusetts. Each has different eligibility rules, funding limits, and deadlines.
Synagogues, churches, mosques, schools, museums, community centers, and hospitals have all received funding. The application process is paperwork-heavy and the deadlines vary by state. Even sophisticated organizations get tripped up.
